Avengers Initiative 20 cover by diablo2003 Avengers Initiative 20 cover by diablo2003
This is the cover for Avengers Initiative #20 which follows on the heels of Secret Invasion. Cover's been done for a few months now but they were waiting until Secret Invasion #8 came out to show it since it could contain spoilers. The characters are Wasp and Yellowjacket.
Penciled and inked on bristol board with brush and Copic multiliner pens and then colored in photoshop.

Hope you dig!
-Mark

Good artwork here! But theres no doubt in my mind that Jan will return, My only fear is it
will affect any chance of her and Hank getting back together again, Comic writers love
to turn things inside out! Scarlett Witch will be back too! You'll see!

The color work made Janet look even more sad then the line art. This is comic art work at it's finest.

Hey man, stupid question but HOW do you do the colouring so slick? I've tried but I think the way I do it takes way too long. Your colouring almost has a cell shading effect, like a can see the gradual tones of colour but they're distinct whereas mine looks like gradients. Is there a way you do it so that you dont have to constantly keep re-selecting an area?

Even though I ended up hating the plotline itself (oh, writers, why must you continue crapping on one of the few canon pairings I love?), I adored this cover. I think I agree with the people who like the inks alone better than the color job, though.

I have to ask how you get that smudge effect with the ink. The only way I can think it taking a brush to the ink before it's dry, but what kind of brush is best for that sort of thing?

There's no smudging in that picture. It's all solid inks and cross-hatching. The hatches are just really thin; you might be perceiving them as smudges because the picture was drawn, inked, and colored at a large size and then reduced in resolution, shrinking the image.

As for how to get that effect, it's just as you say: let the ink on the brush dry or thin out as you use it (sometimes a paper towel is handy for that) and then brush away. It's called "dry-brushing," just FYI. You see a lot of it in cloud and fog effects in some of Jim Lee's work.

As far as using a brush, it depends on what you're going for. For one commission, Jim Lee just picked up a 6-year-old's watercolor brush and did the inks of an entire picture using that and some markers/micron pens. As he would say, you have to learn to use all of the tools available to you, and sometimes you'll have just what you need lying around without having to go to a fancy art store that sells overpriced equipment. Saves you time and money!

Well, thank you! A very informative response.

I've only been drawing for a year or so (not counting my grade-school stick figures) so it's nice to get some advice from people more talented than myself.
