Cover for Fearless Defenders #9 for Marvel Comics. I've always discouraged up and coming artists still trying to learn to draw by drawing in an anime and manga style. It's a very niche style and most will find that, even if they can get competent in drawing in a manga style, they won't have the skill or technique to draw in any other style or be able to draw from real life. it's like learning how to cook by starting with a souffle and only cooking that-it's hard and you might get good at it over time but it's not going to do you much good when you're asked to cater a banquet. Conversely, if they start by trying to build a foundation of drawing from life and study shape, form, and composition, they will find that drawing in an anime or manga style will be incredibly easy with a little practice. So bottom line, put away the anime and manga and go sit in a park and draw what you see. You may not find it near as fun as drawing Dragonball Z but, in the long run, you'll find it does a ton more for getting your manga work to where you'd like it to be.
I'd also outlaw those "how to draw manga' books. The do far more harm than good-HAHA!
Hope you dig!
