In my 2 years of drawing Spider-man for Marvel in various books, I've never had to draw Mary Jane for some reason which is a travesty since I think she probably the hottest girl in the Marvel universe. I've noticed that I haven't drawn many 'hot chicks' in my artistic career and needed to brush up on them since a lot of the best artists in comics are known for their beautiful women. For this piece I was thinking a lot about the master of beautiful women, Adam Hughes. he has the ability to draw the most gorgeous girls with just a few pencil strokes so I wanted to try and figure out what makes his drawings pop so well. Not that I was trying to imitate his style but more the technique with was originally made popular by the racey 'good girl' art posters of the 40s and 50s. So, in truth, I guess I was trying to illulate the poster artists that influenced Adam's work.
This piece was done entirely in Pencil and digitally colored in photoshop 5.5. Took me a while since I'm not a very fast colorist and I wanted to try a smoother style than the cell shading I usually do. I get a lot of messages asking how I color my stuff and, to be honest, I don't know. Everything I do is entirely trial and error so I don't have a technique I can share that would help anyone, sorry guys. Hope you dig it!!
"Face it Spidey, Mary Jane can take care of herself!"
Mark, I am more impressed with your coloring ability than your skills in drawing a "hot chick", bro. One thing I've learned about you over the years is that you've always been one to pick up new art techniques like lightening!!
I've seen you draw some VERY cute girls, though, bro. Your Darkstalkers girls are pretty cute with Felicia being the cutest. I guess where you going is to make your girls look more..well...sexually provocative, eh? Hughes' work is DEFINATELY the place to learn. Although Art Adams...to me...is getting hot on his trail with the way he can make his woman look "cute" with an extreme sexappeal. LOVE THAT!
Anyway, bro....I am eager to se what you produce. I would like to see your take on Black Widow, She-Hulk, Spider-Woman, Power Girl, Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl.
hate to be the guy that goes bitching about the drawing everybody loves (don't get me wrong it's awesome) but i find the stockings a bit much (makes her look a bit slutty)
for the rest: groovy
This is extremely hot. I'm not a huge Mary Jane fan (I really don't like her in the movie, but I've skimmed through some of the newer Mary Jane comics and they weren't bad. Although, I was drawn in by the artwork, so go figure). The coloring is SPECTACULAR. Freaking beautiful. Wonderful job! <3
