This is the cover to Young Avengers #2 coming out in June from Marvel Comics. Had a lot of fun with this one because I got to do some action instead of a static shot. Also got to try out using a manipulated photo for the background instead of a line drawing. I don't think this technique should be used very often but can be very effective when used correctly.
Pencil and inks by me with colors by Christina Strain. Hope you dig! -Mark Facebook: [link] Drawstick Art Forums: [link] CommentsWhoa... This is totally bad ass. Well, it's very dynamic and excellent as far as the action goes. To be honest I don't like the way the photo manip looks in the black and white... HOWEVER it works 100% in the finished colors. I guess the real trick is that whenever a photo manip really works with the art and is barely even perceivable as a photo then it's a-o-k. In the finished colors it really compliments your art and fits well. Anyway there's really no reason to slay yourself rendering a cityscape when something like this works so well. I mean if you'd photo referenced it, the background wouldn't look too different so why not just slap a manip on it and call it a day?
Long story short (too late!) it looks great and I don't mind the photomanip one bit. -- Ravensdojo.com (my comics and art) I wanted to write an effective critique. I really did. But I...can't. I can't think of anything to say other than how amazing this looks. You even made that manipulated photo into your own by adding the reflections on the broken glass...I honestly would not have guessed it was a photo if you hadn't mentioned it because I know how great you are with backgrounds.
Excellent composition, great coloring, tight action. It just works. -- Be decisive, even if it means you might be wrong.--H. Jackson Brown Jr. [link] Rather, I guess it's the colorist that made the manipulated photo HER own...
