Journal Entry: Fri Jul 16, 2010, 12:28 PM

It's that time of year again, SAN DEIGO COMIC-CON 2010!

Just like last year I will be a guest of the show but unlike last year I will be in a swanky booth instead of Artist Alley. You can find me in the illustrator area at BOOTH #4403! Please stop by and say hello
Turner

Now for the big announcement! As you may or may not recall I debuted my artbook 'Devilish' last year at the show and opened it up for order via Deviant Art. Well, this year is no exception. Debuting on Wednesday's preview night at Comic-Con is 'Angelic: The art of Mark Brooks vol.2'! It's a hardback full color saddle stitched book with a spot varnished cover. It's chock full of pin-ups, covers, sketches, and design work from the length of my career so far and includes some familiar work as well as stuff never seen before now.
Hard cover, 8 3/4x12 3/8 inches, 48 pages, full-color, full bleed, sewn pages. Price: $25.00  I will have limited copies available at the show so please come by early to get your copy if you're going to be at the show.

I'll also have new lithographs as well as some classics so, hopefully, there will be something you will dig. All lithos are a mere $20.

Journal Entry: Thu May 20, 2010, 9:56 AM

First off, I'm on TWITTER so follow my day to day antics over there when you get the chance- [link]

Secondly, there are still a few copies of my artbook left before the new book goes in production so make sure to get your copy while you can because once they are gone, they're gone never to be produced again! It's a hardback full color saddle stitched book with a spot varnished cover. It's produced by Brand Studios and, if you've bought a book produced by these guys, you know how impressive these book look. it's chock full of pin-ups, covers, sketches, and design work from the length of my career so far and includes some familiar work as well as stuff never seen before now. .

It's Spreading

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 15, 2009, 1:35 PM

So I'm going through some photos from the New York Comicon that I took and discovered this among the shots. Never noticed it until now.
Turner

Then I'm going through my wallet to pay for a soda at the store and found this among the crumpled bills.
Turner

Now today, I'm surfing online and find this.
Turner

Very weird indeed.

Art critique

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 23, 2009, 8:17 PM

Every week I get a handful of requests to review or critique an up and coming artist's work either through e-mail, Facebook, Myspace, or Deviantart. I'm usually too strapped for time be able to oblige mostly because it takes a long time to give the work it's proper attention and typing out a critique is far less effective than actually speaking with the artist. Recently, I have come up with a way to give portfolio reviews verbally without having to type a long critique as well as help others that might not be having their portfolio reviewed but could still take in a lot of knowledge by listening in. Each week a portfolio will be chosen from the submissions and reviewed live during our Tuesday podcast on Breaking the Panel on Talkshoe.com- [link].
Turner
If you want to have your portfolio reviewed live on the air during an episode of Breaking the Panel please put your submission pages in this thread [link] on the Drawstick Art Forums along with your name, age, and any other information you would like to include. You will need to register for the forum to be able to submit your pages Please keep your submission to no more than 4 sequential pages and 1 cover.
Turner
It's very important to realize that your work will be shown via a link and discussed LIVE during the show by me and a panel of other artists. We will be doing a real hard nose critique that will be fair and honest. We will be telling you and the other listeners what you are doing right and, more importantly, what you are doing wrong and how to possibly fix them. You will need to have a tough skin and be able to take a critique if you want to submit. You will also be invited to call in if you would like to participate live but it's not required to be chosen. The episode will also be available on itunes immediately after the show ends. Only one portfolio will be chosen each week since we will be spending a good amount of time discussing the submission and wouldn't have time to do more than one.
It's also important to mention that I, in no way, consider myself an expert on comic art or critiquing other's work. I am just a guy that has worked in comics for a good while and have learned a lot through my experience. My only hope is that I can pass on a little of what I've learned and help some people in getting where they want to go faster.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to seeing what you guys submit!

-Mark

DRAWSTICK ART FORUMS

Journal Entry: Fri Mar 13, 2009, 10:38 PM

Turner

After years of absence, I've relaunched the Drawstick art forums and would like to encourage everyone to come by and log in,sign up, or re-register. I've wiped the board clean and given it a fresh coat of paint so I hope you'll come by and have a look around. I'm encouraging an open lounge atmosphere with little intervention by me or the moderators. When we last left off, we had 1800 members and I've invited everyone back so I expect the board will be hopping in no time but, for now, it's a virgin board ripe for the pillaging. This board is for you guys and gals so I hope to see you all there!

Why we starve

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 10, 2009, 4:23 PM

I'm trying to think of the best way to word this without coming off as some sort of dickhead because it's something that really pressed my buttons this past weekend and I feel the need to vent. I write this not only for everyone else to read and maybe discuss but in hopes that the person that did the deed in question will read it too and better understand his actions as well as where I'm coming from.
This past weekend I attended the New York Comicon in Manhattan. The New York fans are some of the best in the world and I always have a really good time meeting them, signing books, doing sketches, or whatever else might come to mind. Along with this I also sell copies of my sketchbooks and lithographs of work I have done to anyone that would like them. I think it's very important to be accessible as an artist both personally as well as the merchandise I sell so I try to keep my prices very reasonable so anyone can afford at least something from my table. For many years now I have had people that would bring all sorts of things for me to sign including comics I've worked on, posters, books, trading cards, and even an action figure or 2. Every once and a while people would bring me pieces of my artwork that they print themselves from the web as well and I would usually sign them but recently stopped in the last year or so, the reason which I will get to in a moment.
This brings us to the event in question. A person walked up to my table on Saturday and produced 6 prints from his bag, 2 were 8.5"X11" and the other 4 were roughly postcard size. He placed them in front of me and asked if I would sign them. I immediately recognized that these were not anything produced by me or Marvel Comics so I asked if he had printed them himself. He said yes so I politely said that I couldn't sign anything that was produced by someone taking my artwork off the web and making their own prints. His response was that not everyone can afford a print or sketchbook and it became obvious that he was getting angry. Again, I explained that this is my living and my artwork is how I feed myself so people downloading and printing my artwork illegally is only hurting my ability to make a living. He then said I was the only one of the 200 artist he has done this with that has refused to sign. I again apologized and explained that I am not the only one that doesn't sign illegal prints. At this point, I had various other people standing around my table and I was a bit flustered by the whole situation since his anger caught me by surprise. He again verbalized with genuine anger and surprise that he couldn't believe I would refuse to sign his prints and then walked off in a huff. I thought on this all weekend and am finally able to put into words what I wish I was able to articulate to the man at the show.
So now you're probably asking, "what's the big deal? sign the damn prints!". Well, for many years I did and about 70% of the time the prints would end up on ebay. A lot of the work you see on my page is done just for myself so I can have original lithographs to sell at shows and appearances so I was never paid to produce the work. My pay comes when I take the artwork to shows and people buy the lithographs. If someone prints something from the web, has me sign it, and then sells it on ebay he has now profited off my hard work as well as taken away a small percentage of me making a living. Contrary to popular belief, most comic artists are far from rich and most of us are just trying to scrape a living a get by so protecting our artwork becomes extremely important for us to continue making a living. Of course, I'm not saying that this person was definitely going to take the prints to ebay and sell them but I can't take that risk and even if he didn't intend to sell them, my feelings on the subject still stands.
So, to that gentleman who asked me to sign your prints I ask him this- If you illegally downloaded a musician's latest CD, burned it to a disk and took it to an event where that musician is signing autographs would you ask him to sign your pirated disk? How about asking an actor to sign your illegally downloaded movie or an author to sign your illegally downloaded manuscript from his latest book? Unless you are completely amoral or vacant of any sort of tact I would guess your answer would be an emphatic "NO". So why would you think it would be any different from a visual artist? I, like any other art, really appreciate anyone enjoying my work. After all, it's the reason I got into comics in the first place but equally as important is my ability to feed myself and my family and put a roof over our heads. Will me signing your illegal prints cause my house to go into foreclosure? Probably not but there has to be a line drawn somewhere and I think I was more than kind to this person in explaining this and feel he had absolutely zero right to get angry.
I can only hope that he didn't realize the full consequences of his actions or how it effects me and any other artist he does this to. As always, these are only my opinions and I welcome anyone who disagrees. Perhaps I am being too harsh or am missing something so I am open to other ideas. In the end I hope the person I encountered on Saturday in New York will read this and have a better idea of where I'm coming from and give his actions a little more thought.

ADDENDUM: We will be discussing this very subject tonight as well as comic book convention etiquette tonight on the podcast "Breaking the Panel". Go to the following link and log in or register to listen in or call in with your questions or comments!: [link]

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 29, 2008, 1:16 PM

Just a quick journal to thank an amazing Deviant that has really snazzed up my page by creating a really cool custom CSS layout for my journal entries! KyleRobinsonCustoms :iconkylerobinsoncustoms: is a huge asset to DA for all the support he provides everyone as well as his talent for creating custom action figures(something near and dear to my heart). Here's a few samples of his work and I'd really appreciate it if you went over to his page and had a look around. I promise you won't be dissapointed!

SENIORITY!

Journal Entry: Tue Dec 9, 2008, 1:53 PM

Wow, this is so unexpected! I've always dreamed the day would come but I never knew it would be such a huge surprise. I want to thank my Mother and Father as well as my wife and son for giving me the inspiration to always achieve what I set out to do. My agent Sal Bernstein, my accountant Harvey Lemonjello, and my stylist the Amazing Rosha- I couldn't have done it without you guys! Ow, I know I'm forgetting some people..The fine folks at Marvel Comics for all the opportunities, the guys at Strathmore for all the fine paper and pencils and the peeps that make my color so vibrant- I'm looking at you Adobe! Finally, a big thanks to Jesus for whom with all things are possible!

Okay, all jokes aside, I really appreciate being given this honor and, while I have no idea who nominated me or why I was chosen, it always feels good to be recognized by your peers and I assure you I don't take this lightly. Can't say that I'm all that clear on exactly what the honor means other than that cool little comma next to your name but still very cool none the less. Thanks to all the guys that have commented on my main page and I promise to keep trying to make as much semi-kickass artwork as I possibly can. Can't promise I will always succeed but the effort is the most important part anyway, right?

Thanks again!
-Mark

For anyone that might not have heard the news today, we lost one of the comic greats last night. Michael Turner, after waging a valiant fight with Cancer for the last 7+ years, Passed away last night at the age of 37.
To say I knew Mike would be a vast overstatement since I only saw him once or twice a year and it was usually just to say hello but I knew many of his friends very well and have come up in the industry hearing stories of Mike's kindness and devotion to his thousands of fans and the smile that always donned his face even when the Cancer he suffered from was at it's worst. year after year, even when in great pain, Mike would travel around the country to as many conventions as he could to show his appreciation to anyone that loved him or his work as well as pumping out cover after cover month in and month out even when the pain got so bad that he had to draw flat on his back. Mike set an example for all of us to follow whether it be work ethic or a general positive outlook on life even when things are at their worst.
They say that an artist is special because he or she is the only being in the world that is immortal. The works they create can live on forever far after the artist is gone. Mike proved this by showing all of us what is possible with hard work and determination and he created characters and worlds that will stand the test of time and keep him living in the artwork he drew.
If you knew Michael or his work, please take a moment tonight to pray for Mike as well as all the family and friends that are mourning his loss. If you're not familiar with Mike, please take a second to look him up and see the kind of art he created. We lost one of the great ones today at far too young an age and our industry is poorer for it.

If you would like to send condolences to Michael's family you are encouraged to do so. Please send them to:

C/O Michael Turner

His company Aspen Comics is also encouraging anyone wishing to do so to send a charitable donation big or small in Mike's name to The American Cancer Society [link] or the Make-A-Wish Foundation [link]|917760391

I wanted to take a minute to introduce someone who is relatively new to the D.A. community. years ago when I was still trying to break into comics there was this young artist that seemingly came out of no where drawing a book for Wildstorm/Image Comics called Gen13. The energy and dynamic poses blew my mind in a way that few other artists had done before and he made me want to work even harder to get into the business that I loved so much. He showed me things that I didn't know were possible or hadn't even considered in comic work and I like to think his influence can be seen in my work to this day even in a small way. Over the years he's worked on pretty much every major character from Batman and Superman to Spider-man and the X-Men and even launched his own incredibly successful creator owned title DangerGirl. To top it all off, I found out years later that we were both born on April 12th, 1973 so finding out were are exactly the same age and he was a rock star before I could even get my foot in the door made me want to work even harder.
He's already a legend in comics at the ripe old age of 34 and shows no sign of stopping so I hope you'll all head over to his page and peep all his amazing work. If you're already familiar with Jeff I hope you'll head over and have a second look at all his work but if you're new to Jeff's style of art (and if you are please let me know what rock you've been living under) I hope you'll head over and see what an artist at the top of his game can produce! And while you're there, make sure to leave him a comment and let him know I sent you=)

This Thursday night, tune in to the BIGFANBOY LIVECAST #7, featuring myself and inking master Jaime Mendoza.  Host Mark Walters runs an interactive internet radio show, where listeners can call in and participate in the chat room, or just listen online live.  The show begins at 9pm Central (10pm Eastern) this Thursday night, January 25th.  For full instructions and info on the show, head over to
[link] and look in the CREATOR INTERVIEWS section. We'll be talking about everything from Comics and movies to video games and the seedy underbelly of professional comic work (i.e.- booze and strip clubs). Not only that but I've agreed to do a shot of tequila every 15 minutes during the duration of the show(that's 8 shots for anyone that's counting) so please sign up and call in to make fun of me or just listen to me make a complete and utter fool of myself.

This is sure to be a fun couple of hours, so please tune in!

instructions for signing up and calling in for free are at the following link:
[link]

It's easy to do so I expect all of you to be listening or calling in. I need all the support I can get!=)

And since I still have Sketchbooks available, I'm including the previous journal entry:

PLEASE READ THIS FULLY! ALL ORDER INSTRUCTIONS ARE IN THE JOURNAL!

Well, it's that time of year again! The 2006 sketchbook is hot off the presses and available for your immediate consumption. The book is a bit more impressive this year with 42 pages of doodles, sketches, and linework I've done over the last year. Over 100 drawings crammed into one handy dandy book. The sketchbook comes SIGNED and square bound(no staples for this bad-boy) with a glossy cardstock cover. As a little BONUS, I like to doodle original sketches on the inside cover from time to time so you might be lucky enough to randomly receive one of the sketch editions!!

NOTE- DO NOT ASK FOR A SKETCH EDITION! These are random and asking for one is a sure fire way to guarantee you won't get a sketch copy. I do these when I have time and completely for fun so trying to fulfill everyone's request for sketch copies takes away from my regular work I have to do for Marvel Comics on a daily basis. The good news is that if you do get a sketch edition you get it for the same price as a regular edition!=)

The sketchbooks this year are $15 plus $5 shipping anywhere in the 48 states. Hawaii, Alaska, and international orders will cost a little more based on your location. This is just for the 2006 sketchbook. The 2005 sketchbook is out of print and sold out so we won't be able to fulfill any orders for last years addition.

ORDER INSTRUCTIONS: Simple! Just shoot an e-mail off to Markbrooksart@msn.com saying you'd like a sketchbook and my lovely wife Lisa will get back to you usually within 24 hours with full details for ordering the book. We accept checks, money orders and PayPal so shoot off those e-mails and you'll have a copy in your grubby little hands in no time!

Thanks to everyone that ordered my sketchbook last year as well as anyone that took the time to come by my little corner of the universe to look at my work or leave a comment!! It means a lot that you like what I'm trying to do!

Marvel VS. DC Softball Game!!

Thu Jul 13, 2006, 9:11 AM
PUT ME IN COACH, I"M READY TO PLAY!

Are you planning to be in San Diego next week for Comicon? Are you even the slightest bit athletic? Marvel Comics and DC Comics are going head to head in a all out winner-take-all grudge match softball game to benefit A.C.T.O.R(A Commitment To Our Roots) on Thursday July 20 at 3PM during the convention! The loosing team's captain jersey will be given over to the winning team and displayed as a war trophy at the winning team's convention booth for the remainder of the convention.

The bad news? I'm actually going to don my glove and play on the Marvel team(and probably be laughed off the field). The good news? A.C.T.O.R has opened up a slot on each team for one lucky fan to participate and actually play for either Marvel of DC! You'll be given an official uniform for either Marvel or DC, Provided transportation to and from the convention center with the rest of the team and all the beer and or water you can drink during the game! All you have to provide is your own glove and cleats(not required). This is your chance to rub shoulders and potentially laugh at some of the biggest names in the industry! The team rosters so far include:

Marvel: Andy Schmidt, Axel Alonso, Esad Ribic, Billy Tucci, John Romita Jr, Dennis Calero, Jim Calafiore, Jeff Parker, Mitch Breitweiser, Robert Kirkman, Mike Marts, Mark McKenna, Tony Bedard, Greg Pak, Mark Brooks, Humberto Ramos

DC side, we have Editorial; Jim Lee; Adam Kubert; Mark Waid; Ale Garza, Scott Williams; Ryan Benjamin, Eddie Berganza; Peter Tomasi; Steve Wacker; Joan Hilty; Mike Carlin; Mark Chiarello, Dan DiDio

If you'd like to bid on a slot on the team head over to the links below to bid on your slot! Remember this is all for charity so bid high and bid often!

MARVEL: [link]

DC: [link]

Even if you don't bid or win we all hope you'll come out to the game and support the team of your choice!

I'm writing this journal to make folks aware of something that they might not have known about otherwise and partly for completely selfish reasons. Every year Wizard Magazine hold the annual Wizard Fan Awards. This is much like the People's Choice Awards in that it's one of the only comic awards that's chosen by the fans instead of indutry professionals and insiders. Right now they are holding the nomination ballot to decide which 5 titles/artists/publishers will be chosen for the official ballot that will be released in a few weeks. If you have a few minutes, please head over to [link] and pick your favorite entry for each catagory and then hit submit at the bottom of the page. You'll be able to come back in a few weeks to see what the results are for the official ballot and then vote for the winners.
Now for the selfish part- My book 'Ultimate Spider-man Annual #1' has been picked for potential nomination under the 'favorite one-shot' catagory. If you're a comic fan and enjoyed our book last year I would really appreciate your vote but only if you feel like it was the best of the 6 chosen for nomination. I'm not looking to pack the ballot box but if you enjoyed the issue I would really appreciate the support!

Thanks a bunch and I'll update with a new journal in a few weeks when the official ballot hits the web!

best regards,
-Mark

Well, after over 900 votes and hours of counting we have a winner!!!! First off, I want to thank everyone that participated in the contest as well as everyone that came by to vote. I never expected this sort of turnout and I had a blast as well as learning a few things when I have the next contest.
Now, this competition wasn't without its flaws but it taught me some things I'll make sure to address in the next voting system. Due to some voting misunderstandings Thisisanton as graciously agreed to disqualify some of his votes due to a misunderstanding in the rules and to make sure everyone was playing on a level playing field. Due to this, Thisisanton came in 4th place after counting all legitimate votes so a big congratulations goes out to him for his valiant effort as well as Shadowlotus, Mobile-Ave, Sacking Jimmy, and Lady Cybercat! All of them performed outstandingly and I hope you had a blast doing it!

Runners up:
:iconthisisanton:
:iconshadowlotus2: :thumb32260299:
:iconmobile-ave:
:iconlady-cybercat:
:iconsacking-jimmy:

3RD place goes to TheBob74 with 84 votes! His entry was outstanding with some excellent color choices and I loved the use of highlights and shadows. The power effects on Sunfire, Iceman, and Jean grey were particularly well done!
:iconthebob74:

2ND place goes to Luxun with 91 votes! Luxun's color choices were equally as spot on and I love that he chose to show the AOA universe in a brighter light. Reminds me a lot of the old Mad Max movies looking very hot dusty and dry. Very well done!
:iconluxun:

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST: 1ST place goes to SPYDAMAN with 170 votes!!!!! Spydaman made some very interesting choices with is color schemes doing a cross between paint and cell shading creating a color style I've not see before but achieved spectacular results! His use of reflective light around characters like Colossus, Iceman, and Blink were some of the most impressive I've ever seen. His hard cutting shadows compliment the linework outstandingly as well! I hope everyone will join me in congratulating Spydaman as well as all our placeholders for a very hard fought battle!

And that concludes the first coloring contest here on DA! I'm already working on the second contest which will kick off in the next month or so. It's going to be a little more anime oriented and give the entrants options on how they want to enter. Please leave a comment here in the journal congratulating the winners and stay tuned for the next contest!!!

Best regards!

AOA Color Contest! VOTE HERE!

Wed May 24, 2006, 2:17 PM
LET"S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sketchbookcover

SEE UPDATE BELOW!!!

WOW! I received over 30 entries to the contest which is well over what I expected so a big congratulations goes out to everyone that took the time to color this monstrosity. I know you all worked very long and very hard on your entry and I hope you learned a little bit along the way. A lot of people don't know what they're capable of until they're forced to push themselves past their own limits and I can see that most of our entrants pushed to really show what they can do. I'm sorry to say that there can be only one winner but I'll be a bit cliché' by saying that you're all winners in my book and you should all give yourself a big pat on the back for your accomplishment! Congrats guys!!!

So, without further ado, THE VOTING IS NOW OPEN TO ALL DEVIANTART MEMBERS!!!!!! It's up to all the fine folks here on DA to decide who the grand champion is. Simply click through the links below and decide which entry you like the best. The criteria is all up to you and there's no standard that each piece should be judged by so simply pick the one you like the best and post a comment with your vote. PLEASE ONLY VOTE IN THE COMMENT SECTION OF THIS JOURNAL ENTRY and not on the comment section of each individual entry. Please also vote by NUMBER and NAME so it's easier to tally them all up. Only votes placed here in the Journal entry will count toward the final tally.  You can, however, place a comment for the person you vote for or on multiple entries just to let the artist(s) know how much you like their finished piece(in fact, I highly encourage it!). Also, please get the word out to your friends and your friend's friends to head over here and vote on their favorite. These guys worked long and hard on their entries and I want the turn out to reflect their hard work. Voting will be open for the next 2 weeks and end on May the 24 at midnight(EST). At that point no more votes will be taken and we'll tally all the posts to figure out who gets crowned the COLOR MASTER! Between now and then I'll post up updates in the journal showing who's in the lead as well as 2nd and 3rd place. We've got a lot of really professional entries so I'm thinking the voting is going to be very close.

Remember, this is for a very cool prize package of prints, books, and comics so take your vote very seriously=). HERE'S YOUR CONTESTANTS!!!!!!:

If you don't see your entry on the list and got your done and uploaded  by the due date, please message me ASAP so I can get it added to the list. I did my best to collect them all but I might have missed one or 2.

UPDATE: Okay guys, it's come to my attention that some of you are possibly tweaking your piece and then editing your image so your tweaked piece shows up. Well guess what happens- your thumbnail no longer shows up on my journal entry so I'll know if your piece has been modded. I'm letting this one slide but any further tweaks and reuploads will make you ineligable and none of your votes will count. I know it's hard guys especially when you see other entries and it gives you ideas for yours but we have to be fair about this. Everyone had the same amount of time so be proud of what you accomplished.

UPDATE #2!!- ONLY 7 MORE HOURS LEFT TO VOTE!! If you've put off voting until later, now's the time to do it!!

Also, if you haven't already, please head over and sign up for my Yahoo group for updates on future contests and other cool stuff! [link]

GOOD LUCK!

Hey guys,
Just a quick journal entry regarding my sketchbooks I've had for sale at various conventions. I have a few left and wanted to make them available to people via mail. They're 32 pages black & white with a color cover measuring 8X5.5". It contains artwork and sketches I've done over the last few years and can only be seen in the sketchbook. Right now I have 20 left of my original run of 200 so send an e-mail to markbrooksart@msn.com expressing your interest and my lovely wife will get back to you asap with instructions for recieving them. The price is $10 plus $5 for shipping in the U.S. If you're outside the U.S. shipping will depend on your location. If the demand is high enough, I'm going to see about getting more printed so anyone that wants one will get one.

UPDATE!: Well, the orders have been flying in much faster and in greater quantity than I originally expected. We've exceeded the original 20 I had available so I called my printer and am haveing 200 more made up and will be here if the next week or 2 so there's not going to be any problem filling all the requests. Shoot those e-mails over and we'll get them out to you asap!

Also a quick reminder that the YAHOO group is still up and going strong so swing by and join up! [link]

Best regards,
-Mark

BTW, thanks for the all the well wishes and kind words regarding my recent run on New X-Men. Glad to hear you guys are enjoying my work on the book. I promise it will only get better!
