new comic chat

Fri Mar 25, 2005, 7:12 AM
Hey guys,
Deviantart just opened a new comics chatroom so you guys that want to draw comics someday or those that are already working in the biz should head on over and talk it up a bit. We all get better by pooling our collective talents so it's a great way to share your knowledge and possibly learn something new!

Also, I'll be attending the Deviantart Summit in L.A. in June and wanted to solicit ideas for for the class I'll be teaching. If you have any ideas please let me know and I'll keep a list. Thinggs like page layout, cover design, and anatomy are always fun to teach but I want to know what YOU would like to hear about. There will be other comic pros attending too so there will be a whole gaggle of things you can come and learn about.

Here endith the rant.

Storytelling would be a good thing to talk about, also perspective. Anatomy's kinda a given, but it's not that hard to improve anatomy skills on your own so I'd stick to other things. *If* I was going and *if* I wanted to do comics someday, I'd want to hear about storytelling and perspective; my fiancee wants to be a comicker and that's what he complains the most about not being good at.

This isn't really your field of expertise I know, but I am most interested in learning about self-publishing comics.
I would like to know about what alternative printing methods (aside from offset) are available suitable for small runs, and how to best gear the art work to suit it. For example, what printing methods would look good with halftone shading, what looks best with just line art, that sort of thing.
... And does size matter? I would like to know about how the format desisions are made. Who decides the shape, and how big a comic will be? And why is it that size?
I would like to learn anything that you feel the book "How to Draw Comics the Marvel way" leaves out. Like, is it normal to scream, cry, and tear up pages? Do professionals do this?
What new art techniques are being used now? Has white-out been improved on? Obviously Photoshop is a biggie, but what about simple real media things, like brush pens, gel pens.... whatever. I have many other questions!
I actually am spending the money, and will be at this class. I am looking forward to it!

well im not going, but one thing to try to get thru to people going, is 2 do their own thing...

so many people make things, that were so influenced by others that it is almost a mirror image...

i no that i draw things that share a striking resemblance 2 certain characters(deadpool is one of the greatest superheroes, just because of his personality:D , but spidey is THE BEST there is )

They opened up a new comics chat room? That's sexy , I need to drop by there sometime and talk with some more experienced peeps about comic-ing (? ^^;) and shtuff. :p I'm set on becomeing a Story Board artist, and I think that working on doing commics will help me improove upon being/becomeing one. :aww: I'm not very good with comics right now, (I barely do any ) at least I don't think I am, and I need to work alot on how and when things should happen so it comes across the best way possible to the reader(s) adn just, lost of stuff...But, I won't get any better just sitting and mopeing about all me flaws, I gotta go and work and fix em! :D
Anyways,
Thanks for mentioning the comic chatroom!

:w00t:Only because i took time to look at the forum posts, that i came across your posting & how thankful i did.

For years now i have been such an avid fan of comic books in general, which turned into a love of comic book art & storytelling. I have only recently joined DA, but have seen your work b4, not in the comics, as i have since cut down my fandom of it - becomes an expensive hobby, but on a comic book art site, love your new spidey boy & your samurai warrior especially.

Will watch your work now with interest, its given me lift, to inspire myself into carrying out some comic book sketching.

I'm sad i won't be able to go this year.. I would appreciate it if you could post some of this online, so not all of us miss out. :)
All the topics up there are great, but maybe breaking into the business? I have no idea how to get a job like that, or where to look.. What areas of the country have more of a demand? California? Does it even matter?
Thanks!
